Did You Know... About Spangle?

Property owners browsing through any of Akbuk's local markets will probably be bemused by many of the products available but one in particular deserves some special recognition - Spangle, or more often, Supangle. Available as a packet mix in shops all over Turkey, this is usually found with some other unidentifiable concoctions, possibly including Chicken Breast Pudding (yes, really - so be careful!), but what exactly is it?

The clue is in the name. Linguists may know that Supangle spoken in Turkish sounds a bit like soop-anglay, and soop-anglay sounds a bit like the French words Soupe Anglais.

So what is Soupe Anglais?

Custard! (But a warning before you try putting it on your hot apple pie - Supangle is usually chocolate-flavoured!)

Supangle and an excellent range of other Turkish goods are available in the US from Turkish Taste - however British readers will have to make their own (or just go out and buy some Bird's...)

Akbuk Property Bargain of the Week - 2 Bed Villa for £20,000

What is it?
A semi-detached villa in Akbuk with two bedrooms, bathroom + separate WC, and an open-plan kitchen and salon. There are also two balconies and two sun terraces, one on the roof with a fraction of a sea view, and one on the ground floor. It has a garden front and back and is on a small private holiday estate.

Why buy?
Akbuk is the definition of an up-and-coming location and new villas here fetch around £100,000. This property has attractive views, large terrace areas and sacks of potential - without having to spend a fortune. Other similar properties on the same site are offering not much more (new doors and windows, fresh paint) but asking over £35,000 - an extra £15,000.

Why not?
The estate is average - nothing wrong but there are many in Akbuk that are more attractive and have extra facilities, like a sports area or a cafe. The location is average too - Akbuk has some stunning views and lovely properties within a stone's throw of the sea or the town centre, but this has OK views and the seafront and the centre are at least 15 minutes' walk. The property needs new windows, doors, tiling and plastering, and a new bathroom and kitchen would also be a good idea.

Last word
OK, it's not Buckingham Palace but £20,000 spent on any property in Akbuk is probably a very good investment, and this property is by no means a money pit. £1,000 on renovation work would make it as good as new and a £5,000 refurb would cover a full modernisation - marble floors, new doors and windows, new bathroom and kitchen, replastering, new verandas and a makeover for the garden! Add on another £2,000 for the buying costs and £3,000 for furniture... £30,000 for a villa in the sun. Who could argue with that?

Where is Akbuk?

Akbuk location map Aegean Turkey
Akbuk is a picturesque bay on Bodrum's Gulluk peninsula, part of the beautiful Aegean coast of Turkey.

Akbuk is served by two major airports, Izmir and Bodrum, and by international, European and domestic flights. Flights to Izmir and flights to Bodrum from the UK take about 4 hours, and the transfer from Bodrum to Akbuk is around 45 minutes to an hour. Akbuk is also accessible by road - the main motorway between Izmir, Kusadasi, Soke, Altinkum and Bodrum - and of course by sea! Akbuk's harbour is peaceful, even in summer, and in 2004 was awarded an internationally-recognised Blue Flag award for cleanliness.
